About the AJ Munkegaard Retrofit Kit

Arne Jacobsen designed the Munkegård fixture for Munkegårdsskolen in Søborg, Denmark in 1955. This was the first recessed fixture which illuminated the ceiling, thereby evening out light contrasts.The fixture had a discreet presence in the room, in line with Arne Jacobsen´s architectural approach.

The fixture looks like a disc hovering just below the ceiling – an impression primarily created by the illuminated opening and the suspended placement of the fixture below the mounting surface. The 2-layer glass/acrylic shade ensures uniform, gently diffused lighting. This fixture gives the room the illusion of extra height.

Arne Jacobsen

Arne Jacobsen was born and raised in Copenhagen. In 1927, he graduated as an architect from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. After graduating, he obtained his first job at the office of the City Architect of Copenhagen launching his own office only two years later.
